Itchy Nipples. Causes and symptoms.
The skin covering in our body is not the same on every part. A very evident example of this fact is that of nipples present in mammals, including humans. The skin covering over the nipples is of a different kind because the organ has a special purpose to serve in the females which have an extra function of breast feeding the young ones. This is also one reason why the problem of itching and irritation in the nipples persists more in women rather than men. This article would focus on the itchy nipple problems for females and how to treat them.
Most of the women experience this problem soon after child birth, when they are breast feeding their child. Here are a couple of possibilities.
Eczema of the nipple. The symptoms for this kind of anomaly are flaky, oozing or inflamed nipples. Continuous sucking from the nipple can cause it to dry up and hence develop this kind of condition. This kind is also very common in case of sensitive skin.
Thrush. This a very severe type abnormality caused when the nipple(s) is infected. The nipple would hurt and would develop reddish to pinkish shade to it, and you may start to experience a burning sensation. This can be passed on to the child as well and is visible as horrible white plaques inside the mouth!
A few tips
- When taking a shower make sure that you rinse and clean the nipple with plain water only as applying soap might cause dryness and itching.
- When wiping the nipple and the breasts in particular make sure you do so gently and with a clean cloth as being harsh may cause rashes.
- When nursing the baby, make sure that the mouth is well rinsed and clean of any food particles to avoid infection.
- Use a skin friendly and a soft detergent to clean your clothes and especially the under garments, to avoid allergies.
The nipple is a very delicate part the skin covering, and therefore requires special and delicate care, more so in case of females.
